5 Stylish Boho Maternity & Mommy Outfits And How To Achieve Boho Chic Style

Share

Note: This article is updated as of May 2018.

Boho chic style has become a thriving fashion category unto itself. Rooted in hippie fashion, its super chic and trendy edge makes it an extremely fashion forward style. It’s also become a major category in maternity clothing.

Today, I’m going to show you five super stylish boho chic maternity outfits that you can copy or use as inspiration. I’ll also show you how to achieve boho chic style by following my guidelines and finding out what celebrities you can emulate to get this look.

The outfits and photos below come from mommy fashion Instagrammer Oxana Joe (@oxanajoe). She’s a California mommy of one (scratch that, two – since I originally wrote this, she had a baby boy), and one that’s about to be born. So much of her maternity style was boho chic, and so many of her mom clothes are bohemian inspired.

Below, Oxana has accented her fluidly-draped maternity dress with statement fringe earrings. And while her dress appears simple in an all-white color scheme, it’s dotted with ribbons of crochet for added hippie flare.

The cut of this boho chic dress hints at the 70’s, with a fluid drape and bell sleeves.

What exactly defines Boho Chic, and how do you create this type of look?

Here are some characteristics of Bohemian Chic style

Jane Birkin’s crochet dress was decidedly a bohemian style. You could still wear a dress with crochet detail like this (possibly a less revealing style!) and pair it with a Cult Gaia Luna bag to modernize the look.

Embroidery: Floral embroidery is a hallmark of bohemian and hippie style. Flowers signified a closeness with nature in hippie culture of the 1960s and 1970s, and the embroidery trend has been steadfast in boho chic apparel. Look for embroidered tops, jeans, dresses, and even accessories to add a decidedly bohemian flare to your outfit.

Fringe: It’s been all the rage as a fashion trend lately, and done correctly, it can be a timeless addition to a hippie-chic wardrobe. In the 1960s, fringe was made popular as part of hippie culture.  It was made popular in fashion through the movie Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. And though it went out of style in the mid-70s, fringe has remained a hallmark of boho chic apparel. (encyclopedia.com)

Floral Prints: As mentioned with embroidery above, floral prints nod to a carefree hippie culture and being one with nature.

Bell Sleeves / Trumpet Sleeves: Music icon Stevie Nicks was famous for her bell sleeve looks, and this trend has made a few recurrences in popularity since the 1970s.

Maxi Dresses: From flowy styles to fitted, maxi dresses represent an easiness  and femininity often seen in boho chic style.

Peasant-Style Tops and Dresses: Characteristically, peasant-style garments are simple in appearance (though not simple to make), having smocking, a flowy fit, and full sleeves.

Statement Jewelry: From earrings to necklaces and more, adding jewelry that makes a major statement – in gold, with tassels, and with floral accents – will set the tone for a decidedly bohemian look.

Lace-Up Sandals: Did you know that lace-up sandals were IN in the 70s? They’ve been recreated so much lately, from designers like Aquazzura, Stuart Weitzman, and so many more. And gladiator sandals have taken a nod from this 70s trend, when they were previously popularized.

Boho Chic Celebrities Whose Style You Can Emulate:

When it comes to hippie-chic fashionistas, look no further than modern-day fashion icons Rachel Zoe, Nicole Richie, and Kate Hudson. They each embrace this style in the majority of their outfits, and you can look to them for major inspiration. And guess what? They’re also all moms!

Rachel Zoe gives her style an upscale edge by incorporating designer accessories and wearing defined cuts and silhouettes. She even adds a touch of art deco to her looks.

Nicole Richie has built a fashion empire on her signature boho style with House of Harlow 1960 and her x Revolve collection.

More Bohemian Maternity Fashion Inspiration

Below, Oxana pairs a floral print maternity maxi dress with bold, swingy statement earrings; a structured bag; and colored round sunnies. She finishes her look with the perfect top bun. It’s not just her clothes that make the look, but her hair and make-up also round out her style.

The print and cut of this hippie-chic maternity maxi dress are perfectly accessorized with these sunnies and top bun.

Statement earrings and a structured bag also add a wow factor to this maternity outfit.

The white peasant blouse below is given a modern take with distressed skinny jeans, round sunnies, fringe statement earrings, and matching tan bag and wedges. She has perfectly brought 70s hippie style up to date.

A flowy and ruffled white top goes great with a pair of distressed skinnies, matching neutral wedges and bag, and round sunnies.

Again, Oxana gives a nod to carefree hippie style with the same rounded sunnies. This time, she’s paired them with a floppy hat, an embroidered day dress and fun statement earrings. Her knee-height gladiator sandals also give this look a modern edge.

Embroidery, gladiator sandals, and a floppy hat give this dress a fun edge.

Another take on a peasant blouse can be seen below – this time featuring embroidered bell sleeves and an off the shoulder neckline. The rounded sunnies here have such a fashion-forward look with the gold tone. She’s finished off the outfit with frayed denim and a small, structured bag in a light neutral color.

A white off the shoulder maternity top is accented with embroidered bell sleeves, denim, and a small, structured bag.

On Staying Stylish As A Mom And Mom-To-Be

I’ll leave you with some final thoughts, directly from Oxana, on staying stylish as a mom and mom-to-be. I thought it’d be nice to get her take, since she’s currently both! She says:

“When you are expecting, it can be hard to feel stylish. After all, the pleasures of things like morning sickness can make you feel less than perfect every day. However, there are ways you can still look (and feel) good while pregnant.

One thing that doesn’t have to change while you’re pregnant is your accessories. You can still wear those stunning necklaces and bracelets that you did before!  Don’t be afraid to go for hair accessories like a floppy hat or a cute bandana to complete that cool look.

Just because you’re going to be a mom, it doesn’t mean your style has to change. If you’re a fan of skinny jeans and leather jackets, still wear these during your pregnancy. After all, it might make you lose confidence if you start dressing in clothes that you think you should be wearing, rather than ones you love. Stay true to yourself to still be a style queen during your pregnancy!
