And why this mathematically informed way of dressing will rock your world
Let’s all agree on one thing right now – we could all benefit from making at least one change in our lives that makes our lives inherently less stressful. Am I right? With so many changes happening in our world – literally daily – it would be nice to find more things we can actually control and feel good about.
Enter your capsule wardrobe, aka your new source of joy.
While I speak to so many women who say that their wardrobe brings them nothing but stress, it can actually be a source of inspiration and great fun reorganizing. Pieces that were once shoved in the back from many seasons ago can now be paired in new and interesting ways. A trickle up effect if you will.
You’ve heard me speak about capsule wardrobes before. Creating capsule wardrobes is a way of life that I subscribe to and it is an option for truly everyone. So I’m going to show you how to make getting dressed a way to de-stress. For real!

So what is this elusive Capsule Wardrobe I speak of?
In a nutshell, a capsule wardrobe is simply a few pieces of clothes you can mix and match a seemingly infinite number of ways. It gives you a ton of outfit combinations using a relatively small number of pieces; therefore, by definition, becoming a more affordable and valuable wardrobe option.
So, a capsule wardrobe is a brilliant solution to the “what in the hell do I wear today” conundrum that finds its way into our daily closet struggles. As moms, we love to save ourselves time – especially when we don’t have hours to get ready each day. So, this is where our intelligence and wickedly resourceful skills come into play.
It takes us back to simple math – the math that my third grader is working on, in fact – and which I’m sure will all bring us painful flash-backs to our own elementary years.
If you were to put a capsule wardrobe into a simple math equation, it’d look like this:
Question: Janie has 4 shirts, 4 pants, and 4 pairs of shoes. How many outfits can she make?
Doing the math: 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
Answer: Janie can make 64 outfit combinations.
And Janie only had to buy 12 items to make this work!
Janie is Smart. And so are you.
What are the hard and fast rules of Capsule Wardrobe creation?
Well, the good news is that there aren’t too many rules. But you really MUST be able to mix and match every single piece for it to really work.
You can make capsule wardrobes for different color combinations, different seasons, vacation, just a few days, a week, and so forth. So you don’t need just one large capsule – you could also create multiple mini capsules for extra fun and variety!
