These are our favorite ways to stay happy during the cold of Winter.
Baby, it’s still cold outside! For much of the world, anyway. I know these days well, having spent the first 36 years of my life in the Midwest. It’s that time after the holidays, but just before Spring. Temperatures continue to plummet, and snow and ice pelt your soul (and the driveway). Now is the time you’ll try literally anything to get rid of the winter blues.
So what’s a girl to do, especially right now in this dual season of COVID? Some people are fine with travel and some are most definitely not. So I’m going to share some ways to break your winter blues, whether you want to venture out or stay close to home. Either way, it’s possible, and we’re going to help move you along through the rest of this season with a smile.
Our favorite ways to beat the winter blues
Take a straight up vacation.
While it’s of course possible to contract COVID (and colds and the flu and other unfortunate viruses) while traveling, your chances are low, according to numerous medical sources, since passengers and crew are currently required to wear masks and take numerous safety precautions before, during, and after travel. Bookings are down across the board, and so are prices. This means you can snag yourself a seat to somewhere sunny and warm for a lot less right now.
Stay closer to home, with a staycation.
Maybe you don’t want to venture too far out. No problem! Chances are there’s a hotel or VRBO available for a night or two, so you can just feel like you’re in another world for a minute.
Get creative around your home to make it feel happy while you’re stuck inside.
I became a pro at the art of Hygge. Here are some ways you can make your home feel super relaxed, cozy, and happy during the Winter months.
Throw on some wave sounds and do a relaxing yoga sesh.
This was one of my go-to’s during Chicago’s Chi-beria winter. This also happened to be the last winter before we said peace-out to the Windy City and headed South to sunny Naples.
It was so cold and snowy that winter, you just couldn’t shake a bad mood. One of my favorite ways to de-stress and unwind was to find a great YouTube sound loop of the crashing ocean waves, and guide myself through a warming and relaxing yoga flow.
Take a shower so long and so hot that your skin begs you to get out.
Some days, the cold feels like it’s penetrating your bones. There’s a chill that doesn’t leave the innermost parts of your body. In these cases, the only thing that works for me is to crank the shower to the hottest temperature I can handle, and stay in until I’m practically sweating. It’s a great feeling. Then, just cozy up in a soft robe (this one’s my all-time favorite), pour a glass of wine, and sit in front of the fireplace with a good read.
Buy yourself some brilliant flowers.
Place some in every room in your house. I promise they’ll brighten your spirits and lift your mood. If you can’t or won’t venture out to your local market, some of my favorites to order from online are Farmgirl Flowers, Urban Stems, and Bouqs.
When the cold won’t stop and your mood is grey, it’s time to take control of things. Do something – anything – to break those winter blues. I hope these little tips do just the trick.
