Soni: I love my MZ Wallace large handbag, the cross-body traveler, and the large MZ Wallace tote. I live 40 miles away from my office; therefore, I need to bring materials with me for short notice interviews, wardrobe malfunctions, weather, and any other obstacles. These amazing bags also allow me to comfortably carry my makeup, tiny blow dryer, hair spray, Aveda texture tonic, dry shampoo, extra shoes, a second outfit, and a tiny umbrella.
LUXYMOM®: What is the most important thing you carry with you?
Soni: With the change of norms today, it is incredibly important that my eyes are always done and captivating. We wear masks, and the only relatable feature we have at present is our eyes – so making sure I am ready to go is a must. I carry false lashes with me, with a back-up pair just in case. Waterproof lash glue is also a staple. I also always have safety pins, a collapsible raincoat, and my IFB (uninterruptible fold back earpiece for studio).
I also always have my cell phone. I am in constant contact with my office, and having a reliable form of communication is key. Also, since we are doing a lot of remote location work – my interviews are being done via zoom – having my phone keeps me able to conduct my interviews.
LUXYMOM®: Do you carry any snacks since you’re always running to conduct interviews and attend events?
Soni: Absolutely! I am on the road so much that I need to have some nutriment with me. I like to have cubes of cheese – Babybel, any good cheddar, or fruit. My go-to fruit is grapes, because nothing will get stuck in your teeth like, say, a strawberry. How mortifying to go live and have pepper or seeds stuck in your teeth.
LUXYMOM®: What is a holy grail item you always carry on you.
Soni: Two things: disposable tooth picks! Plackers right angle designs are a God-send. I also always have my lipstick – always. I love my MAC lipstick in #7.
LUXYMOM®: We are all on zoom or some type of virtual communication device, and that can be a little intimidating for those who feel awkward on camera. Do you have any tips to help to improve our on-camera speaking abilities?
Soni: Biggest component for media training is to KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. You want your viewer to feel like “she is in it for me. It is about me. As far as live feeds on social media platforms like Insta live or Facebook live is – do not try to be perfect. It will sound contrived. Don’t rehearse too much. Have a couple phrases, an intro, and conclusion. Go to your call to action at the end and use a cheat sheet out of frame by your camera such as 3×5 card for cues.
