As a stylist who works with moms, I’ve found that one of the number one concerns moms have is how to dress their new mom bodies – their fourth trimester bodies – and how to cover up and flatter that stubborn belly pouch or muffin top. The answer, my friends, is to find yourself a nice collection of peplum tops. A peplum top is the number one top style to flatter a belly pouch.

I guess I’ve always been one of those girls who’s always wanted to cover up that area of my body. I just wasn’t ever comfortable showing it off, and certainly not after having my two kids. And I’ve talked with countless other moms about this subject, who all agree that the belly just becomes a “problem area” after having kids and as we age. Totally unfair.
I’ve been through two pregnancies and gained roughly 35 pounds each time. And after each pregnancy, during that dreaded time we call the fourth trimester (when your body is still recovering, and you haven’t lost the baby weight, but you can’t really wear your maternity clothes any longer) I suffered many months of not feeling comfortable in my clothes, or my own skin, for that matter.
Getting dressed every day was a chore, and it made me feel horrible. My muscles and my skin weren’t as tight as before, and I had a muffin top that seemed to bellow over my jeans. I felt like a blob. And my maternity clothes were too big, while my non-maternity clothes were too small. Nothing fit quite right.
I figured there had to be a middle ground – a happy medium. And when I can’t find the answer to something, I like to see if I can create it.
Because I used to be a designer, I got out my sketchbook and started writing down what I thought the traits of a perfect top would be – and then I sketched it out. I actually drew out what my perfect tops and dresses would look like!
What I realized in that little brainstorming session, was that I had found a pattern of what I felt good in and what I felt looked good on my new mom body. I had found a good combination of what was fashionable and what was comfortable and what was forgiving.

Such a simple thing, really, and yet I never paid it much attention until I realized what it actually did for my body and my level of comfort and happiness after having a baby.
A peplum generally begins at the smallest part of your waist, and flares out from there. Many styles of tops are designed so that the peplum extends to either the top or middle of the hips – which means that they cover the part of our bodies that change the most during and after pregnancy – our bellies!
If you’re lucky enough to find a peplum top that has sleeves, then you’re lucky to also have back-of-the-arm coverage, where we know we all get fluffy during pregnancy.Peplum tops are the #1 style of top to cover a belly pouch, aka muffin top. By definition, a peplum is “a short gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, or blouse to create a hanging frill or flounce” (Oxford Dictionary). So peplum tops essentially have a gathered flounce at the bottom, right in the belly pouch area that we are forever looking to cover up – especially after we have kids.
There is a very simple reason a peplum top is so flattering to a woman’s body. The peplum, or flounce, is attached to the top at the natural waistline, which is the smallest part of the waist. It then flares out below that point, to create a flattering cover to your lower belly area.
Choosing this style of top means you’ll be extra comfy in your clothes! You can wear the pants you love with really cute shirts that cover your midsection and make you feel incredibly good in your own skin.
You can find peplum tops everywhere, at almost any clothing retailer. From the least expensive to the most pricey, they are everywhere. You can shop peplum tops at Target, or you can shop them at Neiman Marcus. And you can also find them in a wide range of styles – from super casual to super dressy – and from long sleeve to short sleeve to sleeveless.
